In Modern Dance the respective technique was developed by the choreographers according to the artistic demands they required of their dancers.
Almost every important representative of the American Modern Dance has adapted the theories of both pioneers Doris Humphrey and Martha Graham in their manner. Doris Humphrey formulated her law of Fall and Recovery, while Martha Graham developed the system of Contraction and Release. Both principles are based on the control of breathing. Josè Limòn, Erick Hawkins, Merce Cunningham, Murray Louis and Alwin Nikolais, Lester Horton or May O'Donnell and others developed their own methods. The portion of the elements of the classical dance also differs extensively. It reaches from entire switching off up to extensive support.
