Tap dance goes back to the 1830s. It originated in the New York part of town of Five Points where different ethnic groups gathered and organised competitions to show their best movements.
Tap dance, as we know it, was birthed from a fusion of African Shuffle, Wellington dance and Irish, Scottish and English tap dance. The greatest influence was the Irish Jig. Thus a new American style developed. With two metal plates ahead and behind on the shoes, the rhythmical sounds which fit to the optical impression and to the music are generated with the dancing. The dancer becomes therefore the Percussion-musician.
